This is a story that spans over seventy years, from the Second World War, until the 21st century. The author refers to the history that has helped create modern-day Europe, dating back to after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Frankish Empire, the formation of modern-day France, and the foundation of England.
It is about a boy growing up from the 1940s and his experiences with death and illness in an ever-changing world. Therefore, the Grim Reaper forms part of this story, with the race against time getting ever nearer. That includes the spirit world, with some experiences. Also accounts, in brief, of adventures and travelling in Europe from an early age.
This story gives the reader a personal account about cancer, chronic illness, its treatment and cure over a lifetime experience. Also, a fairly in-depth view of the National Health Service. There is humour and sad moments which some people can relate to in this modern-day world of hanging on.
